Laminated Bowls Versus One Piece Construction
Laminated bowls look good but are inherently prone to splitting along the glue seams. This is because wood naturally expands and contracts with the temperature and that fluctuation separates the glue from the wood. The glue separation causes the bowl to split and fall apart. This is true even if the bowl is sealed with a finish. If repeatedly left in standing water, the seams of a laminated bowl could eventually fail because of water seepage. If you accidentally place a laminated bowl into a dishwasher, the heat will melt the glue and the bowl will fall apart. Laminated bowls have a tendency to chip on the edges.
Acaciaware is made from one piece of solid acacia wood and does not have similar problems. Water will not penetrate the solid wood and acacia is one of the hardest woods on the market. Acacia is even harder than oak and has a tight grain. Both of these features make the one-piece constructed bowl impermeable by liquids, will not stain, pick up odors and the wood will resist expansion and contraction. Acacia wood is naturally resinous which reinforces it’s already hard grain. There are no seams so no glue separation.
